Synesthesia at The Empress Dining Palace: When Fine Dining Becomes a Full Sensory Journey

Synesthesia was a natural expression of that identity.

For one evening, The Empress did not simply provide a backdrop for Ivan Co's work. It became an active participant in the experience. Its signature elegance framed the kinetic sculptures. Its impeccable service created the unhurried atmosphere the exhibit demanded. And its purposefully curated menu completed the sensory narrative, ensuring that every sight, sound, and flavor worked in concert to heighten the guest's experience.

This is what The Empress does best: it transforms a meal into a memory.

Ivan Co's kinetic sculptures occupy a rare space in contemporary art. Grounded in decades of expertise in metallurgy and jewelry-making, each piece is constructed from wood, bent metal, and semi-precious stones set in aurichalcum, a special metal alloy the artist forged himself. They are visually stunning. But it is when they move that they become something else entirely.

Synesthesia featured seven of Ivan's works, including intricate pendulums, automatons, and gravitrams, each one thousands of hours in the making and entirely one of a kind. The "Penumbra Vergo" mirrors the cosmic contrast of an eclipse. The "Vox Desertii" explores desert mysteries through a pendulum tipped with a luminous green jade orb. The "Gaudium Desiderii" features a pendulum scepter adorned with dynamic rays, an explosion of light and joy. The pièce de résistance of the evening was the "Ad Memoriam Legatum," a commissioned kinetic sculpture inspired by the 1927 science fiction film Metropolis, merging Art Deco style with the contrasting ideas of utopian and dystopian realities.

Ivan described the philosophy behind the exhibit with characteristic precision:

"A deliberate antidote to the hurried pace of our modern life, my pieces aim to draw my audience to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with themselves on an authentic, visceral level. Completing the multisensory journey was a curated musical soundscape by Fyne Audio and Rega, with Charles Gan playing selections from the 1980s on a limited edition Rega Planar 10 turntable.

Adding a personal dimension to the evening, Joy~Nostalg Group Executive Officer Mr. Jacinto C. Ng, Jr. brought his own music collection to the night, playing selections on a limited edition Rega Planar 3 turntable. It was a quiet but meaningful detail: the leader of the organization that built The Empress, sharing something personal with the guests in the space his team created. Music, like the kinetic sculptures around him, played best when given the time and space it deserved.
